Anchorage has been doing that very Anchorage thing lately where the weather looks at the forecast, shrugs, and says, “What if I was sunny for eight minutes and then switched it up on y’all?”

One minute you’re thinking, “Wow, patio season!” and the next minute the sky turns gray like it just read the comment section.

But honestly? That might be the perfect metaphor for the week. Sometimes things feel hard to navigate. Sometimes the emotional weather changes fast too. And when that happens, the best thing we can do is make the town we live in feel a little more like the town we want to live in.

That’s really the whole point of this newsletter and everything I’m trying to do as Mr Anchorage: get people out, get people connected, remind us there’s still good stuff happening here, and maybe help Anchorage feel a little less like a bunch of strangers sharing the same potholes.

I love us, Anchorage. If you see me out there, don’t be shy. Say hi.

Now grab a rain jacket, sunglasses, a backup hoodie, and maybe a snack. We’re going weekend hunting.

Live Jazz with the Phil Knowlton Band

Where: Castle on O’Malley, 1520 O’Malley Road
When: Friday, May 29, 7-10 PM
More info: Shops at the Castle on O’Malley / AK Concerts event listings

Let’s start the weekend inside an actual Anchorage castle, because apparently we’re fancy now. I just made a video about them yesterday.

The Phil Knowlton Band is bringing live jazz to Castle on O’Malley Friday night, which feels like exactly the kind of South Anchorage curveball I love: a quirky local landmark, live music, food and drinks, and the chance to sit inside a building that looks like it was designed by someone who said, “What if Tudor England moved to O’Malley?”

This is a good pick if you want something relaxed, local, and a little more grown-up than yelling over a speaker at midnight. Bring a date, bring a friend, or bring your own mysterious castle backstory and see if anyone challenges you.

Bonus points if you wander the Shops at O’Malley while you’re there. That place is becoming a full-on treasure cave of Alaska art, antiques, and “wait, what is that and why do I suddenly need it?” energy.

South Anchorage Farmers Market

Where: Kelly Connect Ice Center / O’Malley Sports Center parking lot, 11111 Old Seward Highway
When: Saturday, May 30, 9 AM-2 PM
More info: South Anchorage Farmers Market

This is your Saturday morning reset button.

South Anchorage Farmers Market is back for the season, and it’s one of the easiest ways to feel like you have your life together, even if your fridge currently contains half a lime, mystery sauce, and three separate containers of leftovers you’re afraid to open.

You’ll find local produce, baked goods, prepared foods, Alaska-grown goods, and the kind of community energy that makes you remember Anchorage is not just a place where we complain about road construction. We also buy rhubarb, stand in food lines, run into someone from work, and pretend we planned our meals this week.

Go early, bring a tote bag, and prepare to say, “I’m just going to look around,” right before buying something delicious.

Live Music with Schaefer Mueller at Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market

Where: Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market, downtown Anchorage
When: Saturday, May 30, 1-5 PM
More info: Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market / AK Concerts

If you want your market trip with a soundtrack, this is the move.

The Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market is doing its summer thing downtown, and Schaefer Mueller is listed for live music Saturday afternoon from 1 to 5 PM. That means you can browse vendors, grab food, people-watch like it’s an Olympic sport, and enjoy live local music without committing to a full nighttime production.

This is a good “bring the family, bring visitors, bring the friend who says there’s nothing to do here” kind of event. Downtown markets are one of those simple Anchorage pleasures: snacks, local makers, summer daylight, and at least one person walking around with kettle corn like they just won a prize.

And honestly? Sometimes that’s enough. A little music, a little wandering, a little local flavor. Weekend restored.

Buku Live in Alaska

Where: Club Nyt Lyt, 221 East 5th Avenue
When: Saturday, May 30, 9 PM
More info: Eventbrite / Visit Anchorage listing

Now for the people whose weekend does not end at “farmers market and bedtime.”

Buku is coming to Club Nyt Lyt Saturday night, and this one is for the bass-loving, late-night, downtown crowd that hears “9 PM start” and thinks, “Perfect, that gives me time for dinner, a nap, and a full personality change.”

Eventbrite and Visit Anchorage list Buku Live in Alaska at Club Nyt Lyt on Saturday, May 30, with the show starting at 9 PM. Expect electronic music, big energy, and a crowd that probably owns better shoes than I do.

This is not your quiet little jazz-chair evening. This is the “text the group chat and hydrate responsibly” pick. Anchorage nightlife has been taking some hits lately, so if this is your scene, show up and remind downtown it still knows how to move.

Sunday Open Mic Night at Van’s Dive Bar

Where: Van’s Dive Bar, 1027 East 5th Avenue
When: Sunday, May 31, 8 PM
More info: Van’s Dive Bar / venue social listings

Sunday night open mic at Van’s Dive Bar feels like the correct way to close out a weird-weather Anchorage weekend.

Van’s has become one of those no-frills local rooms where Anchorage musicians, comics, poets, brave first-timers, and “I swear I only need one more song” people can all share the same air. Their venue information describes live music, open mic energy, and a neighborhood bar atmosphere, and their social listings point to Sunday open mic starting at 8 PM.

This one is for people who like their local culture a little raw, a little unpredictable, and very Anchorage. You might hear a great song. You might see someone try new material. You might witness a moment that makes you say, “I have no idea what just happened, but I’m glad I left the house.”

That’s live local art, baby. It’s not always polished. That’s why it’s alive.

Honorable Mention: Spenard Jazz Fest all weekend

Where: Multiple Anchorage venues, including Castle on O’Malley, Refuge Coffee, Van’s Dive Bar, The Nave, Organic Oasis, Anchorage Museum, and more
When: Still going strong the May 29-31 weekend
More info: Spenard Jazz Fest / AK Concerts

If jazz is calling your name this weekend, don’t stop at one show.

Spenard Jazz Fest is spreading music across Anchorage with performances and workshops at multiple venues, and this weekend has a full spread of options. Kick things off Friday with jazz at Castle on O’Malley, then keep the groove going through Spenard and beyond at spots like Refuge Coffee, Van’s Dive Bar, The Nave, Organic Oasis, and Anchorage Museum.

This is one of those weekends where Anchorage reminds you it has layers. We’re not just mountains, moose, and people arguing about roundabouts. We’ve got musicians, venues, workshops, late-night shows, daytime lawn concerts, and a whole lot of people keeping the creative lights on.

Go find a set. Tip if you can. Clap like you mean it.

Get out there, Anchorage

So there you go. This weekend you can start in a castle, shop like you meal prep, wander a downtown market, dance until your step counter gets concerned, and finish the weekend at an open mic where anything could happen.

And yes, the weather might keep changing its mind. That’s fine. We live here. We are basically trained professionals in layering.

The bigger point is this: getting out matters. Supporting local matters. Saying hi matters. These little events are how a city becomes more than traffic, bills, headlines, and weather complaints.

They are how Anchorage becomes the town we want to live in.

I love us, Anchorage. See you out there.
