It’s been a little wet out there, Anchorage.
Not “build an ark” wet. More like “why is my driveway making soup noises?” wet. But the tradeoff is here: the sun is hanging around longer, the evenings are getting brighter, and summer is standing at the edge of the room like it’s about to make an entrance.
So shake off the drizzle. Here are five ways to get out this weekend.
First Friday Around Anchorage
Where: Various locations downtown, including Anchorage Museum, 625 C St.
When: Friday, May 1; times vary, with the Anchorage Museum free from 6–9 p.m.
What & why: First Friday is the choose-your-own-adventure of Anchorage culture. The Anchorage Museum has free admission, gallery talks, hands-on activities, jazz, planetarium shows, and more. Alaska Public Media also lists IGCA, Cabin Fever, Turnagain Ceramics, and Visit Anchorage as part of the night’s broader art crawl. This is the low-pressure “just go wander around and feel like a citizen of the world” pick.

Yonder Mountain String Band
Where: Atwood Concert Hall, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, 621 W. 6th Ave.
When: Friday, May 1, 7:30 p.m.
What & why: Bluegrass, folk, rock, improvisation, and enough acoustic energy to make your flannel feel underqualified. Yonder Mountain String Band is bringing a two-hour show downtown, and CenterTix lists this one as ages 6+. Good pick if you want live music that feels polished but still loose enough to breathe.

Anchorage Citywide Cleanup Kickoff
Where: Westchester Lagoon
When: Saturday, May 2, noon–3 p.m.
What & why: The snow melted, and Anchorage revealed its annual collection of “who left this here?” Citywide Cleanup officially kicks off Saturday, and you can grab the classic orange bags, help clean up streets/trails/parks, and feel morally superior for at least 48 hours. Matson’s also doing giveaways for participants!
More info: Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.
Anchorage Civic Orchestra Spring Concert
Where: Sydney Laurence Theatre, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, 621 W. 6th Ave.
When: Saturday, May 2, 7:30 p.m.

Big Anchorage Energy
This is one of those weekends where Anchorage quietly reminds you it has range: art walks, live music, late-night dancing, community cleanup, and a full orchestra—all stacked into one stretch of brighter, longer days.
The rain might still be hanging around… but the light is winning.
And once the light wins up here—everything else follows.
See you out there, Anchorage.
