Anchorage, I don’t want to say the weather has been gorgeous lately because I’m afraid the sky will hear me and immediately turn into a wet gray dish towel.

But come on.

We’ve had the kind of daylight that makes you walk outside and think, “You know what? Maybe I am an outdoorsy person.” The mountains are flexing, the patios are calling, and every local with sunglasses is temporarily acting like they live in a sunscreen commercial.

Also, I need to say this: I can’t believe how much the Mr Anchorage community has grown lately. The views, the shares, the reposts, the comments… All of it helps this little Anchorage experiment keep moving. Thank you for helping me tell more local stories and get more people excited about this city.

If you see me out there this weekend, don’t be shy. Say hi. I’m probably the guy talking too seriously about a building, a salmon, or why Anchorage is secretly more fun than people give it credit for.

Let’s get into the weekend.

Hilltop Music on the Patio: Great American Trainwreck

Where: Hilltop Ski Area, 7015 Abbott Road
When: Friday, June 5, 6-7:30 PM
More info: Hilltop Ski Area / Visit Anchorage

Hilltop is kicking off its summer patio music season with Great American Trainwreck, and honestly, that is a very Anchorage sentence.

We spend all winter looking at Hilltop like, “Yes, that is where we slide down frozen water on purpose,” and then summer shows up and suddenly it becomes a patio music spot with mountain views. Talk about character development.

Great American Trainwreck brings Americana, bluegrass influence, and foot-stomping energy, which feels like the right soundtrack for a sunny Friday night in Anchorage. Grab some food, bring your friends, and enjoy live music in one of those places that makes you remember we live in a city where “casual evening plans” can still involve a ski hill.

This is a strong pick if you want something outdoorsy, musical, and very Anchorage without having to commit to a full-blown wilderness expedition. Patio season is short. Use it now. The mosquitoes are unionizing.

Ship Creek Slam’n Salm’n Derby

Where: The Bait Shack / Ship Creek, 212 West Whitney Road
When: Starts Friday, June 5, 7 AM; runs daily through June 20
More info: The Bait Shack / Visit Anchorage

There are few things more Anchorage than standing where it all began, surrounded by railroad history, industrial edges, downtown buildings, and people trying to pull a king salmon out of Ship Creek.

The Slam’n Salm’n Derby is back, and whether you’re actually fishing or just wandering over to watch the action, it’s one of those events that reminds you Anchorage is not a normal city. Other downtowns have valet parking. We have hip waders, tide charts, and somebody saying that the action was right before you got there…

Anglers compete for prizes by landing king salmon, but even if you do not fish, Ship Creek during derby season is worth a visit. It is part sporting event, part local tradition, part “how is this happening five minutes from office buildings?”

Bring your camera, bring your patience, and if you’re fishing, maybe bring the emotional resilience required to hear about the one that got away.

49th State Brewing Yappy Hour

Where: 49th State Brewing at The Rail, 721 Depot Drive
When: Friday, June 5, 4:30-7 PM
More info: 49th State Brewing / Alaska Public Media Weekender

This one starts a little before the usual Weekend Picks cutoff, but I’m making an exception because dogs.

Yappy Hour at 49th State Brewing is a dog-friendly First Friday hangout with treats, doggie pools, and the kind of patio energy where every pup becomes a minor celebrity. Humans can enjoy food and drinks. Dogs can enjoy the social scene. Everyone wins, except maybe the person who wore black pants around a golden retriever.

This is the pick for anyone whose dog has been staring at them like, “So your weekend plans include you having fun, and I’m just supposed to accept that?” No. Bring the dog. Let them network. Maybe they’ll finally meet that husky from across town they’ve been mutuals with on SniffTok.

And if you do not have a dog, this is still a perfectly acceptable place to politely admire other people’s dogs like a normal member of society.

Alaska Run for Women

Where: UAA Campus near Cuddy Quad, 3400 Seawolf Drive
When: Saturday, June 6, morning races; 1-mile and 5-mile options
More info: Alaska Run for Women

The Alaska Run for Women is one of those Anchorage events that feels bigger than the route itself.

Yes, there is running. Yes, there is walking. Yes, there will probably be at least one person who looks way too cheerful for that hour of the morning. But the heart of this event is community: raising money and awareness around breast cancer and women’s health while bringing people together on the UAA campus.

There are 1-mile and 5-mile options, so this is not just for elite runners who own watches that cost more than my first car. It is for walkers, runners, families, supporters, survivors, teams, and people who just want to show up for something meaningful.

This is a good reminder that getting out in Anchorage is not always about entertainment. Sometimes it is about standing next to your neighbors, moving with purpose, and remembering that community care can look like a whole crowd of people in sneakers.

June Tunes: Picnic Concerts in the Garden

Where: Alaska Botanical Garden, 4601 Campbell Airstrip Road
When: Sunday, June 7, 4-6 PM
More info: Alaska Botanical Garden / Visit Anchorage

Sunday afternoon at the Alaska Botanical Garden with live music, snacks, blankets, and ice cream available for purchase? That is not an event. That is Anchorage trying to flirt with us.

June Tunes kicks off with The Grassteroids playing bluegrass, plus Wild Scoops on site, which means you can sit in a garden, listen to music, and eat ice cream like you are the main character in a very wholesome Alaska summer montage.

This is a great family-friendly pick, a date idea, a “bring visiting relatives here so they stop asking what locals do” idea, or just a calm way to close the weekend before Monday starts making eye contact.

Bring a blanket, bring a picnic, and let yourself have a quiet little reset. Anchorage gives us long summer days for a reason. Use one of them to sit somewhere beautiful and do absolutely nothing productive.

Honorable Mention: Anchorage Summer Night Market Opening Day

Where: F Street between 6th and 7th Avenue, Downtown Anchorage
When: Friday, June 5, 5:30–8:30 PM
More info: Anchorage Summer Night Market / Visit Anchorage

The Anchorage Summer Night Market opens Friday downtown, and that feels like one of the unofficial signs that summer is no longer “coming soon.” It is here, it has a vendor booth, and it probably smells like food truck smoke.

Opening day includes local vendors, music, and downtown Friday night energy. This is an easy add-on if you are already headed downtown or looking for a casual wander before the rest of your weekend takes off.

Get out there, Anchorage

That’s the lineup: music at Hilltop, salmon at Ship Creek, dogs at 49th State, sneakers at UAA, bluegrass in the garden, and a downtown night market for good measure.

This is the version of Anchorage I love most: everybody out doing their thing in the same absurdly beautiful place. Some people are fishing. Some are running. Some are dancing. Some are eating ice cream in a garden. Some are just trying to convince their dog not to cannonball into a patio water bowl.

And all of it counts.

Thanks again for helping Mr Anchorage grow. Every share, repost, comment, and “hey, I saw your video” helps more people find the good stuff happening here.

I love us, Anchorage.

See you out there.
