Anchorage, the World Cup has officially kicked off, which means somewhere in this town there is a person pretending they “just happened” to be at 49th State at 11:00 a.m. on a weekday because they “had errands downtown.”

Respect.

Between soccer, summer light, and the ongoing remodel of Town Square Park, Anchorage feels like it’s in full motion right now. And speaking of Town Square: if you or your family bought one of those commemorative bricks, the city is removing them as part of the reconstruction and trying to return them to the original owners. So check in with the Muni before your family legacy becomes municipal archaeology.

Also, I just want to say this: the Mr Anchorage Facebook group has been growing faster than I can keep up with, and the comments have honestly been one of the best parts of doing this. Every time I post a story, somebody adds a memory, a correction, a family connection, or a little piece of Anchorage I never would have found on my own. That has been such a source of joy and inspiration in my life. So thank you.

Now grab your sunscreen, your hoodie, your emergency hoodie, and your “I’m only going out for one thing” attitude. Here are five ways to enjoy Anchorage this weekend.

F Street Block Party / Showdown Alaska

Where: F Street Block Party / Williwaw Social area, 609 F Street, Anchorage
When: Friday, June 12 at 6 PM and Saturday, June 13 at 6 PM
More info: Paul Cauthen Show - BØRNS & STRFKR Show

Downtown is getting a proper summer soundtrack this weekend. Friday brings Paul Cauthen to F Street for a big outlaw-country night, and Saturday follows with BØRNS and STRFKR for the indie-pop, dancey, “I am cooler than my knees can prove” crowd.

This is a strong pick if you want that rare Anchorage combo of live music, summer evening energy, and being able to say, “Remember when downtown felt alive?” while downtown is actively feeling alive.

Go for the music. Stay for the people-watching. Hydrate like you’re training for a desert hike, even though you’re technically just standing near Williwaw.

Three Barons Renaissance Fair — Fantasy Weekend

Where: Russian Jack Springs Park North, 801 Pine Street, Anchorage
When: Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, noon–8 PM
More info: 3 Barons Website

If you have ever wanted to eat festival food, watch people fully commit to medieval bits, and briefly pretend your biggest problem is “which baron do I support?” instead of “why is the zipper merge still controversial?” this is your weekend.

The Three Barons Renaissance Fair is back for its second weekend, and this one is Fantasy Weekend. That means costumes, performers, vendors, music, swords, whimsy, and probably at least one child discovering they were born to wear a cape.

It’s family friendly, delightfully weird in the best way, and one of those Anchorage events where people don’t just attend. They let their LARP flag fly.

Spenard Pride Market / Spenard Second Saturday

Where: Grassroots Fair Trade / Dos Manos area, 1317 W Northern Lights Blvd, Anchorage
When: Saturday, June 13, 11 AM–5 PM
More info: Spenard 2nd Saturday Website

Spenard is already one of Anchorage’s best neighborhoods for “I went for one thing and accidentally made an afternoon of it,” and this Saturday it gets even better.

The Spenard Pride Market is part of Spenard Second Saturday and features local queer artists and allies, small businesses, sweets, community resources, and the kind of neighborhood energy that makes you remember Anchorage is at its best when people actually show up for each other.

This is a great low pressure Saturday stop: browse, snack, support local makers, say hi to people, and maybe leave with something you absolutely did not need but now consider emotionally essential.

Alyeska / Girdwood Opening Weekend

Where: Alyeska Resort, 1000 Arlberg Ave, Girdwood
When: Saturday, June 13; tram event noon–5 PM, bike park opening day begins at noon
More info: Alyeska Bike Park / Alyeska Aerial Tram

Girdwood is flipping the summer switch.

Alyeska’s Aerial Tram and Bore Tide opening day lands Saturday, and the Alyeska Bike Park is scheduled to open the same day, weather permitting. So whether you are the kind of person who wants to bomb down a mountain on two wheels or the kind of person who wants to ride the tram up and admire those people from a safe distance, this is your moment.

This is also a good reminder that “around Anchorage” can mean “drive 45 minutes and suddenly feel like you went on vacation.” Pack layers, take your time on the highway, and maybe don’t pretend you’re a downhill biker if your main sport is carrying three iced coffees at once.

Summer Hummingbird Days

Where: Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Mile 79 Seward Highway, Portage
When: Saturday, June 13, 9 AM–2 PM
More info: Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

If the Alyeska crowd is going big mountain, Summer Hummingbird Days is going tiny miracle.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is hosting a family-friendly day celebrating Alaska’s smallest travelers, with hummingbird banding demos, pollinator activities, talks, and science-based activities around Bison Hall. It’s free with admission, and it’s the kind of event that quietly reminds you how much is happening in Alaska even when we’re too busy staring at moose to notice.

This is a great one for families, bird nerds, nature lovers, and anyone who enjoys learning something new without having to sit in a folding chair under fluorescent lights.

Honorable Mention: 30th Annual Midnight Sun 7s Rugby Tournament

Where: Alaska Mountain Rugby Grounds, Anchorage
When: Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13
More info: Alaska Rugby Union

Nineteen-plus hours of daylight and rugby? That is either a sporting event or a very Alaskan dare.

The 30th Annual Midnight Sun 7s Rugby Tournament brings teams out for a fast, physical, “summer light soaked” weekend of rugby. Even if you don’t know the rules, you can still appreciate the basic concept: people sprinting into each other with purpose while everyone else cheers like they understand exactly what just happened.

Anchorage, this is one of those weekends where the city feels like it’s trying to do everything at once: concerts downtown, fairies and knights in Russian Jack, Pride in Spenard, tiny birds in Portage, bikes on Alyeska, rugby in the midnight sun, and World Cup games giving every pub television a sense of purpose.

So get out there. Cheer for a team. Support a vendor. Wave at a hummingbird. Reclaim your brick. And if you see me wandering around town looking overwhelmed by how much Anchorage has going on, just know: that is not confusion.

That is civic joy with a “memory card full” problem....
