Anchorage,

I’ll be in Valdez this Friday, hopefully staring at waterfalls, adding another outdoorsy feather in my cap, and squeezing in a few History Checks before the mosquitoes unionize and demand better working conditions.

But just because I’m road-tripping does not mean Anchorage gets to sit on the couch and become one with the remote. This weekend, the World Cup quarterfinals keep rolling, Bear Paw takes over Eagle River, downtown gets loud, and Anchorage continues its proud summer tradition of making it physically impossible to say, “There’s nothing to do here.”

So get outside, enjoy the beautiful weather while it’s behaving, and maybe bring sunscreen, rain gear, sunglasses, and a hoodie, because Alaska likes to dress us like we’re packing for four countries.

Coffee with a Scientist

Where: Alaska Public Lands Information Center, 605 W. 4th Ave., Suite 105, Anchorage
When: Friday, July 10, 2 PM
What & why: Yes, this one sneaks in before the usual Friday-after-5 rule, but I’m allowing it because free coffee, free cookies, and landslide-tsunami science is exactly the kind of nerdy Alaska magic I support. This week’s talk is “Landslides and Tsunamis in Prince William Sound: Past Evidence, Present Tools” with geologist Alena Giesche. Come for the caffeine, stay for the reminder that Alaska geology is basically a dramatic reality show with glaciers.
More info: This Facebook post states the program as free, recurring Fridays, with the July 10 topic focused on Prince William Sound landslides and tsunamis.

Urban Harvest: Gourmet & Medicinal Mushroom Cultivation

Where: Seed Lab, 111 W. 6th Ave., Anchorage
When: Friday, July 10, 5:30–8 PM
What & why: This is for everyone who has ever looked at a mushroom and thought, “I respect you, but I do not understand your lifestyle.” Far North Fungi experts will teach participants about fungi, farming history, and cultivation, then help folks build a take-home mushroom kit in a mobile lab setup. It’s part science class, part homesteader skill, part “look at me, I have become a responsible mushroom parent.”
More info: Anchorage Museum lists registration as required with a $50 materials fee.

Bear Paw Festival

Where: Downtown Eagle River / Business Boulevard area, with festival activity centered around the Eagle River Transit Center area, 11832 Business Blvd.
When: Friday–Sunday, July 10–12; carnival hours are Friday noon–10 PM, Saturday noon–10 PM, and Sunday noon–7 PM
What & why: Bear Paw is Eagle River’s midsummer “everybody come outside” party: carnival rides, vendors, live music, parade energy, and delightfully weird traditions like the Slippery Salmon Olympics. It’s family friendly, chaotic in the best way, and one of those events that reminds you Eagle River is not just “the place you drive through on the way to the Valley.”
More info: The official Bear Paw Festival site lists the 2026 festival for July 8–12 and highlights the carnival, vendors, Grand Parade, Slippery Salmon Olympics, Teddy Bear Picnic, Human Foosball, and beer/music programming.

F Street Block Party Concert Weekend

Where: F Street Block Party / Williwaw Social Outdoors, 609 F St., Anchorage
When: Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11; concert listings show evening start times
What & why: Downtown Anchorage is getting a two-night outdoor music boost. Friday brings Atmosphere with G. Love & Special Sauce, which feels like a soundtrack for people who own both a hoodie and a well-worn camp chair. Saturday shifts gears with Ty Dolla $ign, bringing hip-hop and R&B energy to the same downtown block. Translation: if you hear bass near F Street this weekend, no, it is not the city’s summer road construction learning rhythm.
More info: Tixr lists Atmosphere & G. Love & Special Sauce for Friday, July 10 at the F Street Block Party, and Ty Dolla $ign for Saturday, July 11 at 609 F Street.

Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market

Where: Chinook Lot, 225 E St., Anchorage / 3rd & E downtown
When: Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12, 10 AM–5 PM
What & why: The downtown market is back in full summer form: local vendors, food, art, produce, music, and that classic Anchorage market feeling where you go in for one snack and somehow leave with kettle corn, earrings, freeze-dried something, and a renewed belief in community. This is an easy all-ages stop before or after walking downtown, hitting the museum, or pretending you are “just browsing.”
More info: Marketspread lists the Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market at 225 E Street, running Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM–5 PM through mid-September.

Honorable Mention: Lagers on the Lawn 2026

Where: Palmer Alehouse, 320 E. Dahlia Ave., Palmer
When: Sunday, July 12, noon–5 PM
Why it gets the nod: This one is outside Anchorage, but it’s close enough for a sunny Sunday field trip. The Brewers Guild of Alaska’s third annual Lagers on the Lawn brings together Alaska-made beer, cider, spirits, live music, lawn games, and a fundraiser vibe that says, “Yes, technically this is research into local craft beverages.”
More info: Brewers Guild of Alaska lists Lagers on the Lawn for Sunday, July 12, noon–5 PM, with live music from Braided River and the Casey Smith Project, lawn games, a 50/50 raffle, and Alaska-made pours.

The World Cup quarterfinals are still doing their best to raise everyone’s blood pressure, with Friday and Saturday matches keeping soccer fans glued to screens between errands, markets, and concerts. Meanwhile, Bear Paw is reminding Eagle River to stretch before participating in any salmon-adjacent athletics.

I’ll be over in Valdez trying to collect waterfalls and history facts like Pokémon, but Anchorage, you have your assignment: get out, support local events, take the kids somewhere fun, call a friend, buy something from a vendor, tip your musicians, and enjoy the kind of summer weekend we’ll all be dramatically describing in February.

Stay curious, stay local, and if you see someone running with a salmon this weekend, don’t panic. That’s just Eagle River being Eagle River.
