Anchorage,
I would like to file a formal complaint against spring. Not because it’s late, and not because it’s messy, but because every parking lot in town is currently auditioning to become a lake. I washed my car, looked at it lovingly for about eleven minutes, and then drove through one Southside inland sea just to be back under a cocoon of filth. Such is the season. The snowbanks are shrinking, the puddles are expanding, and somehow that feels like progress. So before your resolve gets tested by another surprise fjord in the Carrs parking lot, here are five good reasons to get out of the house this weekend.
Welcome Home Alaska’s Olympians
Where: Town Square Park, 544 W. 5th Ave., Anchorage
When: Friday, April 3, 5:30–7:30 p.m.
What & why: This one feels very Anchorage: bundle up a little, head downtown, and show some love for athletes who just represented Alaska on a giant stage. It’s free, it’s community-minded, and it’s the kind of event that makes the city feel a little smaller in the best way. If you want a Friday outing with some hometown pride baked in, this is a strong start.

First Friday at the Anchorage Museum
Where: Anchorage Museum, 625 C St., Anchorage
When: Friday, April 3, 6–9 p.m.
What & why: First Friday is one of Anchorage’s most reliable excuses to put on real pants and wander around feeling cultured. The museum is offering free admission, plus gallery talks and planetarium shows, so you can make the evening as artsy, nerdy, or casually curious as you want. This is a great pick for date night, solo roaming, or that friend who says they “should do more local stuff” and then never does. That is if you can talk your kids out of them dragging you out to see the new Super Mario movie…

Disney ’80s-’90s Celebration in Concert
Where: Atwood Concert Hall, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, 621 W. 6th Ave., Anchorage
When: Friday, April 3, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 4, 2 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.
What & why: This is for the folks who can hear one bar of a Disney song and immediately become emotionally available. The show promises a big throwback concert built around the Disney soundtrack era that raised a generation of us. Good for families, nostalgia merchants, and anyone who enjoys the idea of a weekend plan with a little more sparkle than your average errand run. Tickets start at $39.

Kincaid Market
Where: Kincaid Chalet, 9401 W. Raspberry Rd., Anchorage
When: Saturday, April 4, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
What & why: A spring market in Kincaid is basically Anchorage therapy. You get local vendors, handmade goods, and an excuse to swing out toward one of the prettier corners of town without pretending you’re about to do a full cardio adventure. This is a nice low-pressure Saturday pick if you want to browse, snack, and maybe buy something from someone who actually made it instead of from a mysterious warehouse three states away. Admission is free.

The Beat of Us: Alaska Celebrates World Drummers Day
Where: Alaska Native Heritage Center, 8800 Heritage Center Dr., Anchorage
When: Saturday, April 4, 6 p.m.
What & why: This is the kind of event that sounds fun on paper and then usually ends up being even better in person. Internationally recognized drummer Jared “Choclatt” Crawford has been working with Anchorage and Mat-Su students, cultural drum groups, and community members, and this performance is the big finale. It’s family-friendly, community-built, and centered on the kind of shared rhythm that can wake up your whole weekend. Free or pay-as-you-can.

Honorable mention: Nenana Ice Classic
This isn’t an Anchorage event, but it is peak Alaska spring behavior, so it deserves a nod. The Nenana Ice Classic has been going for more than a century, and tickets are $3. The deadline to buy and turn in your guess is Sunday, April 5. If you’ve been meaning to make your annual extremely confident prediction about river breakup time, this is your last weekend to do it.

In closing…
That’s the weekend, Anchorage. May your coffee stay hot, your tires avoid the deepest puddles, and your freshly washed car survive at least one full day before getting baptized by road grime again. Spring may be arriving slowly and in it’s typical dirty way, but it is arriving! We’ll be wondering where all the snow went in no time but not before the Slush Cup. See you out there.
